Under UK law, a series of fixed-term contracts which overall lasts for more than 4 years is automatically treated as permanent unless a further fixed-term contract is justified on objective grounds. This decision of the ECJ suggests that employers may offer permanent employment on different terms at the end of a series of fixed-term contracts, thereby preventing EU law on fixed-term employees from automatically converting the previous fixed-term contract into a permanent contract
